At our core, we honestly
think every day about how we can create products
that will make people's lives easier. This is
not a hollow claim but one easily seen in our
products. They are driven by a design culture
focused around sophisticated simplicity. While
many companies continue to pursue ever more complicated
and ever more technology-driven solutions to problems,
we routinely ask ourselves how we can create thoughtful
solutions through simplicity of design.
The challenges that patients and healthcare
givers have each day in trying to manage their
own or someone else's disease increase every year.
- Approximately 17 million persons are drug-treated asthmatics in the United States. It is estimated that this number should increase to 23 million by 2005 (Source: Datamonitor).
- Internationally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that there are approximately 100 million persons in the world who have been diagnosed to have asthma and this is growing at approximately five percent annually.
- The WHO also estimates that the rate of asthma diagnosis worldwide will grow from 80% to 85% and that those diagnosed asthmatics who are treated with drugs will also grow from 72% to 80%. These factors are what are contributing mostly to the growing asthma market and the challenges to healthcare professionals.
- Approximately 3.4 million annual discharges from U.S. hospitals at an average stay of 5.6 days per patient due to respiratory illnesses according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Of these, nearly one million were due to asthma and chronic bronchitis alone.
- Over 3.7 million visits annually to U.S. emergency rooms due to asthma and all forms of bronchitis (Source: CDC).
- Approximately 12.8 million U.S. physician office visits annually due to asthma and another 13.2 million visits due to all forms of bronchitis (Source: CDC)
The imperative that these numbers
obviously demonstrate is what rests at the core
of our culture, people, and products. We want
to make treating these million of patients by
themselves and by the tens of thousands of dedicated
healthcare professionals and caregivers a much
less complicated event.
